Antonia Hernandez

National Mujer Award Recipient

Antonia Hernandez, President and General Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). Antonia Hernandez has dedicated her life and career to the protection and promotion of civil rights of Latinos throughout the country. Through her leadership, MALDEF has scored impressive victories in the areas of education, political access, employment, immigration and voting rights.

First Regional Mujer Award Recipient

Marylou Olivares Mazon, Director of the Commission of Spanish Speaking Affairs of the State of Michigan, works to implement the Commission’s mission to develop a unified policy and plan of action to serve the needs of Michigan’s Hispanic people. The Office on Spanish Speaking Affairs was established to provide the Commission with information concerning the problems of Hispanic people, and to implement Commission policy. Throughout her long career, Ms. Olivarez-Mason has had an unrelenting commitment to justice and civil rights. She works tirelessly to bridge the gap between government and the people it was established to serve.
