This Could be You, It Starts with a Welcome

By Cristina Abreu

An NHLI email with the subject “2009 NHLI Executive Leadership Program” just came through. Will this e-mail give me the happy news I’ve been waiting to hear? I closed my eyes before opening and reminded myself that everything happens for a reason. As soon as I opened the e-mail, the words “Welcome and Congratulations!” are the only ones that jump out. I knew at that very

moment that life was about to take me on an interesting ride; and I would love every minute of it.

So with that… let the journey begin.

This first week of the training: Understanding One’s Self and Building Networks, focused on learning about leadership strengths and areas for development, cross cultural communication, conflict resolution, team building, setting development goals.

I must admit that I didn’t know what to expect in late February when I landed in San Francisco and headed to meet the other NHLI Fellows.

We came together as strangers but left connected as 22 new hermanas. It was wonderful to get to know the other fellows. We shared stories and life experiences filled with tears, laughter, Spanglish and even some dancing. I really learned a lot about myself and it was great to see that although we may be of different nationalities, ages, religions and opinions, we’re all Latinas! Hermanas!

Armed with a better understanding of my strengths as a leader, I left San Juan Bautista invigorated and ready to take on the world! As I sat on the plane headed back to Tampa, I looked back at what the week offered and I realized again how truly blessed I have been to have had NHLI join me on this journey of life.

Since San Juan Bautista, NHLI fellows have gone through the Harvard Week, which focuses on Effective Change through Public Policy and Management and is held in April at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Some have also started their third week: Leadership Development Program at the Center for Creative Leadership, held from March through August in CCL campuses in Greensboro, North Carolina, Colorado Springs, Colorado and San Diego, California.
