NHLI Celebrates Cinco de Mayo with Celebrity Chef SanchezThe National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) celebrated Cinco de Mayo with Celebrity Chef, Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (D-CA). The evening was a special fundraiser in support of NHLI hosted by NHLI Board member Ingrid Duran and NHLI 2006 Fellow Catherine Pino at their home. Alumnae and Friends of the Institute gathered for a fun-filled casual evening with delicious Mexican food, drinks, traditional music, and good spirits. The evening featured Mexican family recipes, prepared by “Celebrity Chef” Congresswoman Sanchez including her family’s famous enchiladas, refried beans and salad. A highlight of the evening was the presentation to our celebrity chef of a professional chef’s apron embroidered with the words “Chef Congresswoman Sanchez”. Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the victory and courage of the Mexican people during the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. Winning against the odds, believing in your cause, freedom, liberty and justice are the great lessons of Cinco de Mayo. They also form part of NHLI’s core mission to train Hispanas as ethical world leaders. This event is part of a series of celebrity gatherings that NHLI is hosting this year to raise funds for our “Vision Forward: Growing Latina Leaders” with a goal of raising $3 million in three years. The Cinco de Mayo event raised over $5,250 towards this cause. A special thank you to our “Celebrity Chef” Congresswoman Linda Sanchez and the Host Committee: Ingrid Duran, Catherine Pino, Rita Jaramillo, Carmen Lomellin, Neddy Perez, and Maria Elena Campistegy for an outstanding job. |
