NHLI IN WASHINGTON, DC:
Latina Voices on Capitol Hill
Latina voices echoed through the halls of the U.S. Capitol, the White
House, the Library of Congress, and the U.S. State Department as the
22 NHLI Fellows made a mark on Washington D.C. during their final week
of the NHLI Executive Leadership Program. During the week, the Class
of 2005 explored the national political agenda, policy development and
met with high level Latino officials enacting change throughout government
and nonprofit organizations.
The week of activities coincided with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus
Institute (CHCI) Conference where the Fellows got a chance to speak
with Latino congressional representatives about issues that are important
to their communities. Fellows also met with their personal representatives;
participated in White House and State Department briefings with Latina/Latino
political appointees; attended a briefing at the Organization of American
States; and attended the CHCI Gala. The Fellows also developed their
personal leadership skills with sessions on Public Speaking and Focusing
on Your Strengths with the world-renowned Gallup Organization.
A highlight of the week was the Latina Congressional Breakfast held
in the Library of Congress, where seven Latina representatives were
honored for their work serving as catalysts of change by promoting the
advancement of the Hispanic community.
This year’s graduation ceremony was held in the beautiful Hispanic
Reading Room at the Library of Congress. The Fellows spoke to their
families, friends, and noted guests about the indelible impact the NHLI
Executive Program will have on them as they share their knowledge in
their communities. Building leadership skills and knowledge in Latinas
today will bring enormous value for communities and businesses tomorrow,
and help many talented women achieve their full potential. NHLI is a
critical element in achieving the American dream for Latinas.
