Latina Youth Leaving a Legacy

LATINAS LEARNING TO LEAD
2005

The 2005 Latinas Learning to Lead class arrived in Washington, DC with open minds and great enthusiasm to share a week full of training, empowerment and inspiration. The Power of Constructive Listening and Knowing Self was taught by Lillian Roybal Rose, Nanci Luna Jimenez and Rosa Valenzuela. As the participants honored the women in their lives, a strong bond developed among the group that will surely continue when they go their separate ways.

Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch with her passionate and powerful message on Servant Leadership, Leadership Across Generations and Leaving a Legacy encouraged the young Latinas to think out of the box, to be leaders and always remember the little girl who still lives in the barrio. Mariana Kihuen, a Latinas Learning to Lead Institute graduate said, “Consuelo’s words have impacted me. She is a powerful and motivational speaker.”

Up-to-date technological and strategic skills are a necessity for a leader living in the 21st Century. The participants completed a challenging week that included team-building, cross-cultural communications, multi-cultural presentations, the Gallup StrengthsFinder, and personal growth.

The Youth Entrepreneurship session with Juan Albert concentrated on how to strategically build business ideas into realistic work plans and objectives. Dr. Francine De Ferreire Kemp stressed the importance of a well-written resume and preparing for interviews.

Gina Rosario led a hands-on Website Development session where the participants created their own websites. NHLI President Marisa Rivera-Albert shared innovative tips during her workshop, Dressing for Success.

Dr. Sandra Rivera and Michelle Vaca-Senecal stressed the importance of strong public speaking skills and shared the techniques used by Toastmasters International.

At the Telemundo television station, participants had the opportunity to display their public speaking skills through mock interviews. Angela Arboleda and Beatriz Ibarra from NCLR taught the group about the importance of actively participating in public policy. Patricia Teffenhart from the National Latina Health Network shared the major health issues among Latinas and the importance of taking responsibility for their bodies and health. Margie Lopez Waite from MBNA brought to the forefront the importance of Good Financial Habits and Developing Good Credit.

Being in Washington, D.C. gave the participants an opportunity to visit and be briefed at some of the nation’s most powerful public
policy institutions, including the White House, the Organization of American States and National Council of La Raza.

America should be proud of the 2005 Latinas Learning to Lead Youth Institute graduates! The 21 graduates leave behind a legacy of determination, humbleness, and leadership as they leave Washington, DC to use their new skills to make a difference within their communities. This program was made possible through the generous sponsorship of State Farm Insurance, Nordstrom, ExxonMobil, Wal-Mart, Coors, American Airlines, Microsoft, Southwest Airlines, Wells Fargo, Coca-Cola Foundation, Sprint, MBNA, Verizon, Dell, McDonalds, AT&T and Telemundo.
