Grace Napolitano (D-CA); Linda Chavez-Thompson, Executive Vice President, AFL-CIO; Dra. Antonia Novello; Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA); Honorable Rosario Marin, U.S. Treasurer; Noelia Rodriguez, Press Secretary to First Lady Laura Bush; Carmen Lomellin, Executive Secretary for the Inter-American Commission of Women/OAS.

For the second year, the National Hispana Leadership Institute partnered with the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives to host the inspiring Women’s History Month: A Latina Celebration! The event was composed of a panel presentation featuring prominent Latina leaders in areas such as politics, art, business, and health care. This event is important to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of so many important Latinas dedicated to the growth and empowerment of the Hispanic community and to this great nation.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal to Dr. Antonia Coello Novello, the current New York State Health Commissioner and the first woman and Hispanic to be appointed United States Surgeon General.

The prominent panel featured Linda Chavez-Thompson, Executive Vice President, AFL-CIO; Honorable Rosario Marin, U.S. Treasurer; Noelia Rodriguez, Press Secretary to First Lady Laura Bush; Representatives Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) and Grace Napolitano (D-CA); Carmen Lomellin, Executive Secretary for the Inter-American Commission of Women/OAS; Deborah Rosado Shaw, businesswoman and author of DreamBIG!; and Claudia Olivos, Chilean artist. Claudia Olivos’ oil painting entitled “Mensajeras de Paz” was used for this year’s commemorative poster.

After a very enlightening discussion, the panelists, attendees and Dr. Novello enjoyed themselves at a beautiful reception. The event was sponsored by Nordstrom, Goya Foods, State Farm Insurance, and Continental Airlines.
