Message from the President

The year 2001 was truly an exciting and rewarding year for NHLI. We launched two exciting new programs, Women’s History Month: A Latina Celebration! at the Smithsonian Institution and The Latinas Learning To Lead Summer Youth Program. We conducted the NHLI National Leadership Program, although the Washington, D.C. week was overcast by the tragic events of September 11th. The class of 2001 will complete their Washington, D.C. week with the 2002 group. We hired Alison Consoletti as a Program Coordinator; hosted ten recruitment breakfasts across the country; welcomed 12 new funders to the NHLI family of sponsors; conducted a whole day leadership training during our Mujer Awards Celebration and selected Linda Chavez-Thompson, Executive Vice-President for the AFL-CIO and Lena Archuleta, Denver educator as our 2001 Awardees.

As we begin a new year and embark on the celebration of our 15 years of Latina Leadership, we understand the many challenges and opportunities ahead of us. We will be conducting an NHLI 15-Year Impact Study and hosting our anniversary celebration at Epcot on November 1, 2002.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all the people who make NHLI a total success: The NHLI Board of Directors, alumnae, fellows, all of our sponsors, Friends of the Institute and the staff, who unselfishly commit their time and talents in making NHLI the Premier Institute in the country.

As we become the largest minority in this country, Latinas must play an important role in leading the nation’s future. We must be prepared to lead our communities into a world free of injustices, poverty, violence and inequality. Please join us this year in our celebration of 15 Years of Latina Leadership!
