Executive Leadership Training Program

The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI), a national 501(c)3 organization based in Washington, DC was established to address the underrepresentation of Latinas in the corporate, nonprofit and political arenas. NHLI’s mission is to develop Hispanas as ethical leaders through training, professional development, relationship building and community activism.

Are You Ready for the Next Level of Leadership Training?

For over 22 years, the NHLI Executive Leadership Program (ELP) has trained hundreds of women through its yearly four week intensive leadership training program that spans nine months and is implemented in four cities. This profound learning experience provides training in strategic management, public policy, and cultural issues. In addition, each participant mentors at least two other Latinas and completes a leadership project in their communities.

Week 1: Understanding Yourself and Building Networks focuses on learning about leadership strengths and areas for development, cross cultural communication, conflict resolution, team building, development of support networks, and setting personal/professional development goals. Held at San Juan Bautista, California in February.

Week II: Effective Change Through Public Policy Management focuses on public management, negotiation skills, and strategic management through a case study approach. Held in April at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Week III: Leadership Development Program is conducted at the Center for Creative Leadership (the top corporate executive leadership institute in the country), and combines lectures, group exercises, assessment questionnaires, and individual feedback sessions to provide participants with information about their leadership, behavioral and decision-making skills. Participants choose from three locations including: Greensboro, North Carolina; San Diego, California; Denver, Colorado.

Week IV: Impacting Decision Makers and National Policy participants explore the legislative process and national policy issues, and engage in meetings with Congressional representatives and national leaders. Takes place in Washington, D.C. in September.

Program Cost

The actual cost of the program is $25,000 per participant for all four weeks. However, with the generous support of our sponsors, NHLI is able to provide a reduced rate of $12,500 for corporate employees, and scholarships additionally reducing the tuition to $3,500 for nonprofit organizations, government employees, and employees of small businesses. The tuition fee covers registration at the Center for Creative Leadership, Harvard University, program materials, lodging at three of the four sites (California, Harvard, and Washington DC), most local transportation and meals. It does not cover round trip travel to and from program locations and lodging at the Center for Creative Leadership.

Selection Process

All completed applications are screened by NHLI regional alumnae committees. The screening process includes a phone or personal interview of each applicant by the regional screening committee, which provides recommendations to a national selection committee. The 22 finalists are selected based on a series of criteria including the Gallup StrengthsFinder, geographic diversity and ethnic subgroups within the Hispanic community. All applicants will be notified by early December, 2009.
