Frequently Asked Questions
Application/Selection
When is the application deadline?
All application materials, including recommendation letters, must be submitted by Friday, August 13, 2010. Application materials can be found here.
How many participants does NHLI select each year?
Each class includes 22 Latinas from across the country, reflecting diverse geographic and Hispanic subgroup representation.
How will the class of 2011 be selected?
Selection is based on a highly competitive process that looks at applicants’ skills and attributes, accomplishments, life and career goals, and leadership as displayed in their application and letters of recommendation. Each candidate will be interviewed in person by a local/regional alumnae committee and is required to complete the Gallup Strengthsfinder assessment tool.
When will I know if I am selected?
All applicants will know by the beginning of December if they have been selected to participate in the program.
If I am currently unemployed, or a full-time student can I still apply?
No, the program is not appropriate for women who are full-time students, seeking elected office or are going through professional or personal transition. It requires a considerable time commitment and the full attention of all of the participants during the training sessions.
If I currently have less than 10 years of professional experience, can I apply?
No. We ask that all applicants meet 100% of the requirements.
If I am not selected for the 2011 program year, can I reapply again the following year?
If you still meet the program requirements, we encourage you to reapply.

When/where does the Executive Leadership Program take place?
The Executive Leadership Program has four one-week training sessions which take place in various locations. The first week will be in San Juan Bautista, CA in late February. The other weeks will be held at: Harvard Kennedy School in April, Center for Creative Leadership (location/date to be decided by the individual participant), and Washington, DC in September.
Where do participants stay during the program?
Depending on the city and training session, participants will be staying either at retreat centers or local hotels.
What does a typical day during the program look like?
The program is designed to have long days, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The content varies from day to day during the leadership training sessions and will include various activities. However, there are specific pieces which repeat daily including: 3 meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner), reflection journaling, and opportunities to connect with your classmates.
