Thank you for your interest in applying to the Advancing Latina Leaders in Nonprofits Program.

Please read the following before you enter the 2011-2012 online application.

Application Tips:

Prepare the following documents in advance to insert into the online application.

  • Organization’s mission statement & annual budget.
  • Current Resume: A section of the application will prompt you to upload your resume
        • Essays (be prepared to cut and paste your essays into our application, each essay has a 600 word cut–off) — See Part II. Essays

Application Instructions:

The application has four components including:

  • Part I. Applicant and Organizational Information
  • Part II. Essays
  • Part III. Letters of Recommendation Link & Signature
  • Part IV. Application Fee

Part I. Applicant and Organizational Information

  • Current contact information and demographic information
  • Current nonprofit organization: employer mission
  • Include a statement requesting airfare assistance (if applicable)

Part II. Essays (600 word limit per section)

Section 1. Employment Background

A. Please attach your resume detailing: your educational background (include program and professional institutes, etc., dates attended, and highest level completed); current and previous jobs (include titles, dates of employment, and areas of responsibility); professional accomplishments/ honors/awards; community affiliations; and acquired skills.

B. How would you rate your level of management experience?

      • Little to no management/supervisory experience
      • 3-5 years of management/supervisory experience
      • Experienced (5+ years) management/supervisory experience

Section 2. Personal History

A. Please describe how your personal history/life circumstances shape who you are today personally, professional and as a leader?

Section 3.  Leadership Project

Within three months of graduation each fellow, with the support of their employer is required to implement a leadership/community project that meets a management need or leadership issue and elevates the mission of the institution.


Last year, fellows created a wide range of projects including: Creating a marketing strategic plan to advance the organization’s brand and fundraising capacity; an, alumni reengagement plan to support fellows through training and resources post graduation, Latina giving circle where each women contributes a set amount of money that will be returned to a local community organization of choice through a grant process.

A. Choose a potential leadership project you could implement within your organization. Leadership projects must be completed within six months of graduation. Describe the issue in its current form and how you expect to create change. What resources, support and skills will you need in order to make the project a success?

Section 4. Community Impact

A. The Latino community faces many socioeconomic, cultural and political challenges. Identify and summarize one policy area of particular interest to you (i.e. immigration, education, health care, employment, etc.) and what needs to happen at the policy, program and/or community level to address the issue.

Section 6. Leadership

A. How do you define leadership? What do you consider the five most important qualities or characteristics of a leader?
B. Do you believe Latina Leaders are different from other leaders? If yes, how? If no, why not?
C. What does it mean to you to be an agent of change in your community and/or your organization?

Section 7. Contributions

A. Describe up to three important community, religious or civic activities in which you have participated in the past five years. Indicate your level/type of involvement and contributions.
B. If selected for this program, what unique contributions would you bring to NHLI and the ALL IN program?

Part III. Letters of Recommendation & Signature

NHLI requires all applicants to submit letters of support/recommendation. The letters should be written by:

    • Your employer detailing their commitment to your participation (i.e. program fee, time off and transportation if applicable) including their guidance and support of your leadership/community project implementation within your organization.
    • Someone you know professionally who is employed outside of your organization

The online letter of recommendation form may be accessed here. Please send this link to your recommenders. All letters should be submitted online before Friday, August 26, 2011.

Part IV. Application Fee

Each application requires $35.00 processing fee and may be paid online via credit card or check mailed to NHLI 1601 N. Kent St, Suite 803, Arlington, VA, 22209.
